What is S2000M?

ASD Spec 2000 is an international standard which integrates all material management requirements. Chapter 1 of the military version, ASD Spec 2000M (S2000M), is mandated by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) for use in high value equipment acquisition projects.

Using a common data set, S2000M defines business rules to be followed at various stages of the material management process, and provides various sets of standard messages that are to be used by business partners to exchange information in an unambiguous way.

SPEC 2000M is split into six chapters and provides a solution to the following business needs:

1A Provisioning Spares Selection
Which spares do we require? How many of each?
Chapter 1A – defines how the supplier should provide information to the customer about the selection of support items and spares.
Parts Identification
How do we identify each component of a piece of equipment?
This chapter defines the structure and layout of an Illustrated Parts Catalogue, which could be used when equipment documentation is required on paper or microfiche, instead of being presented in digital format. Digital publications are defined in the sister standard : ASD SPEC 1000D - International Specification for Technical Publications Utilising a Common Source Database.
1B Codification Item Identification
How do we identify products in a standard manner?
Chapter 1B - Codification provides you with the interfacing messages to define a standard reference for identifying spares between industry, the National Codification Bureau, and the customer
2 Procurement Planning Price Negotiation
How much will it cost?
Chapter 2 – Procurement Planning defines how the supplier should provide information on parts offered for sale and how prices should be agreed.
3 Order Administration Managing the Orders
How is an order placed?
Chapter 3 – Order Administration covers placement of orders, monitoring of order processing and delivery.
4 Invoicing Payment
How do we guarantee rapid and accurate payment?
By integrating the payment functions, Chapter 4 - Invoicing provides the fastest and most efficient means to guarantee rapid and accurate payment for goods and services delivered.
5 Repair Administration Repair and Overhaul
How do we handle repairs?
Chapter 5 - Repair Administration - covering management of repair orders, monitoring spares consumption and repair forecast planning.
6 S2000M Light Less complex projects
Do we have to use the full scope of the standard?
S2000M Light provides guidance on how to operate a simplified version covering the essential business processes, whilst adhering to the principles set out in the full specification.

SPEC 2000M is recognised alongside its sister standard ASD SPEC 1000D (for Electronic Documentation) and the USA's MIL-STD-1388 (for Logistics Support Analysis - LSA) as a source specification for the NATO CALS Acquisition Logistics Process Model.

The aim of SPEC 2000M's originators was to cut costs by internationally agreeing procedures, terminology, and an electronic means of exchanging information, in order to facilitate commercial traffic in spares and repair, throughout the life of an equipment program.

S2000M is maintained and updated by the S2000M Maintenance and Co-ordination Group (MCG) supported by the NATO Maintenance & Supply Agency (NAMSA).
